Probably the single best scene of acting in Prometheus, and it’s not even in the movie itself. Peter Weyland is depicted as addressing a crowd at a TED event in 2023. He is much younger than he was in the actual movie.
The video was ran on TED’s blog and part of the social media campaign executed by Ignition Interactive for the movie prequel to Alien. This was the very first time anyone has marketed something via the TED portal. At the end of the video, viewers are directed to Weyland Industries’ website, a website created to immerse viewers in the world of Prometheus before the actual movie’s timeline.
More activations are executed within the website itself, where audiences addressed in the role of investors to Weyland Industries, and invited to solve puzzles to unlock more content on the site.
Users are also subsequently invited to view a second video about David 8, another piece of brilliant acting that the movie somehow lacked.
LinkedIn too?
For the first time ever, LinkedIn was also utilized to bring consumers further into the universe of Prometheus through a job offer. InMails were sent to influencers to apply for a job with Weyland Industries, prompting praises for using such an unorthodox channel for promoting the movie.
More websites were also subsequently launched as the movie drew closer to keep audiences, with one such launch coinciding with the transit of Venus, which of course, fell right into the plot of venturing to another planet.
The campaign was truly an ingenious way of using social media channels that we once thought would never be used for marketing and has definitely raised the bar in terms of what can be done to break through the clutter of the social media landscape.
