The above design was submitted for a t-shirt design competition organized by the National University of Singapore’s Windsurfing Club.
Competition Requirements
The scope of the competition was to create a t-shirt design based on the logo of the NUS Windsurf Club. The logo had to stay in full colour and be incorporated as a key part of the t-shirt.
Concept
I wanted to bring out the thrill of riding the waves in the design. This was done through the motion of the graphics from left to right. As the audience reads, he moves together with the type. The fonts chosen were casual to show the carefreeness of surfing in the wind. The splash effect also alludes to water sports.
I also considered the fact that the logo itself was a Windsurf, and it would be good to incorporate it into the design, giving it a visual focus. This was achieved by making the design white except for the logo. This makes sure that the logo will stand out even though it is small as compared to the whole design. The waves at the bottom of the logo was added for stylistic effect and also to make it part of the whole design.
Result
Unfortunately, my design lost out to a better contender this time around through Facebook voting. I had a lot of fun designing this though, and the project really helped me to be more aware of the visual elements of fonts and how they can improve the overall design.
